Old Bridge Township, New Jersey is a township in Middlesex County. The original inhabitants of the area were the Lenni Lenape Indians. The first settlers from Europe arrived in the 1730s and the area was made up of mostly farms and the population growth was slow. Fishing and recreation in the Bay were also taken advantage of by early settlers. The railroads started coming through in the 1800s, and by 1850 mills were being built in the area. Products were transported by railroad, and the waterfront was also used for commercial, residential, navigational and recreational purposes. In the 1950s building started to boom and farms were being sold making development possible. Old Bridge Township was originally incorporated in 1869 as Madison Township, but in 1975 the name was changed to avoid confusion with another borough named Madison. The approximate population is 65,400 residents.
