Milltown, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County. In 1889 it was incorporated as a borough from part of North Brunswick Township. Before the Europeans began settling, the area is believed to have been a Lenape settlement alongside Lawrence Brook because of artifacts found in the area. The borough was reincorporated in 1896, annexing a part of East Brunswick Township in 1902. The borough was originally called Bergen’s Mill after a grist mill there but later became Milltown. The mill remained in operation until the 1840s, when fire destroyed it. A new building was built and over the years different businesses have occupied the location.
